Wanting to learn all she could about fish, Karen De La Mer couldn't believe her luck at finding an old reference book on exotic sea life. Just the thing for a little light reading, for a marine biology student. But thanks to the Book of Changes, and a wave of enchantment flowing over her, the new mermaid Karen might be getting to study fish first hand.

Hmm. What would happen if the Book of Changes tried to affect a shapeshifter?

The shape shifter would likely find themselves locked in the form that best suited their personality / hopes / desires. Mind you they may not LIKE being stuck in that new form, no matter how much they would otherwise enjoy their new body.

Shapeshifting being a physical property of the body, not mind. So if the body were permanently changed, it would impact their powers.

But if the shapeshifting weren't a physical property, the Book wouldn't remove it?

You'll have to explain that one.

If shapeshifting was due to say, an object, if it was not destroyed in the change to the new form it would still be usable. But the base form would now be what you were transformed into.

I was thinking of things such as a learned (possibly magic-like) skill, or as you say provided by an external object. Being gifted a spiritual ability might qualify as well.

If the new form can learn how to use that magic again, it is possible. However their "default / natural" from would be the new one that The Book transformed them into.

The change does affect the mind but only to the extend of being comfortable in their new form and innate abilities. And the once hidden personality or desire is now revealed for all to see. But in theory, whoever gave the divine blessing (or curse) already knew that. So it's unlikely, their new outlook on life would greatly impact that "gift". Depending on the circumstances of how the ability was obtained an the character involved, I see at the moment 3 probable outcomes.

1) They would retain the ability to shapeshift, but their default form is now what they were transformed into. But who'd really notice a they could resemble their old selves whenever needed, although could be awkward at times. This would include ability to cloak self with an illusion or mentally convince a person of what they were seeing,

2) The blessing overwhelms the transformation. (Devine trumps artifact). While it may still have an impact, the person slowly reverts back to their old self. Depending on what they had become, it could also lead to some interesting problems they would have to explain

3) Due to the new personality / shift in perspective, the blessing is lost or the curse is broken.
